Instagram Portrait, Post, Story & Reel Validator

Creating content for Instagram is complicated. You have Square Posts (1:1), Portrait Posts (4:5), and Vertical Reels (9:16).

But the biggest headache? The Reel Grid Crop. When you post a vertical Reel (9:16), Instagram automatically chops it into a Square (1:1) for your profile grid. If your text or face is too high or too low, it gets cut off.

Stop guessing. Use our free Instagram Validator below.

  • For Reels: Select “Reel/Story” and click “Check Grid Crop” to see exactly what will show up on your profile.

Instagram Post Sizes (The Basics)

While Instagram supports landscape photos, the algorithm (and your engagement) favors taller images that take up more screen space.

  • Square Post (1:1): 1080 x 1080 pixels. The classic standard.
  • Portrait Post (4:5): 1080 x 1350 pixels. Recommended. This takes up more vertical space in the feed, increasing the time users spend looking at your content.

2. Instagram Reels & Stories (The 9:16 Standard)

Stories and Reels share the same dimensions, but they have different “Safe Zones”.

  • Dimensions: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 Aspect Ratio).
  • The “Safe Zone”: You must leave the top 14% and bottom 20% free of important text.
    • Top: Covered by the Instagram header (username, back arrow).
    • Bottom: Covered by the caption, audio name, and like/comment buttons.

3. The Reel vs. Grid Dilemma (Crucial!)

This is where most creators fail. You design a beautiful vertical Reel cover, but when someone visits your profile, they see a messy, cropped square.

The Rule: Always center your main subject or headline within the middle 1080×1080 square of your vertical image.

  • Use the “Check Grid Crop” button in our tool above to verify this instantly.

4. Instagram Profile Picture Size

Your profile picture is small, but it’s the first thing people see.

  • Upload Size: 320 x 320 pixels (Minimum).
  • Display Shape: Circular.
  • Tip: Center your logo or face perfectly. Any text in the corners will be cut off by the circle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best size for Instagram in 2026? For the main feed, use 1080 x 1350 (4:5). It maximizes screen real estate compared to square posts. For video, always use 1080 x 1920 (9:16).

Why is my Instagram Reel cover blurry? Instagram compresses images over 1080px wide. Ensure your design is exactly 1080px width. If you upload a 4K image, Instagram’s compression might make it look worse than a standard HD image.

How do I fit a full picture on Instagram without cropping? If you have a wide landscape photo, use a tool like Canva or the “Portrait” mode in our validator to add white or colored borders to the top and bottom, forcing it into a 4:5 or 1:1 shape.
